When to Call a Professional Automotive Expert and When to Attempt a Do-It-Yourself Repair

There may be some vehicle maintenance or repairs that you can do, but when is it wiser to call a professional automotive expert?

Why do it yourself?

The main reason do-it-yourselfers tackle automotive maintenance or repair is cost. Sometimes a replacement part is relatively inexpensive, and the objective is to save money. However, the installation may be difficult, requiring a lot of time and skill, so it is better left to the professionals.

Other drivers are more knowledgeable about auto repairs and have the confidence to work under the hood. We’ve broken down the types of repairs we believe DIYers can successfully accomplish.

Simple auto repairs for novice automotive DIYers

  • Replace a car air filter Replacing the cabin or engine air filter is easy. You won’t need any special tools, only a screwdriver is required.
  • Check and replace engine oil Your oil levels should be checked regularly. You can find detailed instructions on how to check and/or replace the oil in your owners’ manual.
  • Check and adjust the tire pressure – Look on the driver’s door sill for the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle. Using a tire pressure gauge, you can check whether the tires need air. Bring your car to the air pump at your local gas station and fill the tires to the proper PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • Replace wiper blades – Be sure to purchase the correct size for your vehicle’s year, make, and model.

For intermediate automotive DIYers

  • Replace light bulbs – It is easy to replace light bulbs, but accessing the bulbs can be more difficult. You will most likely have the needed tools on hand. What is needed is patience.
  • Changing the oil filter – A novice can add oil to the engine, but changing the oil filter should be left to the more advanced DIYer. While this is a fairly simple task, it can have its issues. Be aware that the filter must be tightened to the correct pressure and a damaged drain plug can cause more problems. Also, be sure to dispose of the old oil in the proper manner.

When to call a professional automotive expert

It is not practical to attempt some auto maintenance for even an experienced do-it-yourselfer. These projects call for sophisticated equipment and tools as well as a level of expertise that comes from professional training and experience. Here’s when it makes sense to step back and let a professional automotive expert step in:

  • Engine and transmission repairs – These require professional skills and special tools.
  • Battery replacement – Reaching the components without special tools can be more trouble than it is worth.
  • Vehicle electronics – Advanced electronics in today’s vehicles require specialized equipment and knowledge. Often, after a repair is done, the onboard diagnostics need to be reset using specific protocols.
  • Fluid flushing – A major service, like a transmission fluid flush, a coolant flush, or a brake fluid flush, should be done by professionals with the proper tools to access the parts successfully.
  • Fuel pump replacement – This repair requires draining the fuel tank, which can be dangerous without the proper equipment.
  • Vehicle diagnostics – Always bring your vehicle to a professional if any warning lights come on. Professional auto repair shops have advanced and accurate diagnostic equipment that will read the exact fault code stored in your vehicle’s computer. Professionals will decipher the code and determine the problem so it can be repaired properly.
